Abstract

This volume is a new annotated edition of J.H. Prynne’s 1983 poem The Oval Window, making use of photographs taken by the poet at the time and place of composition, together with a substantial portfolio supplied by him of source and reference material. This source material includes political and economic news published during the period in early autumn 1983 when the poem was written, together with extracts from literature, Eastern and Western philosophy, optics, anatomy, computer programming language, and a considerable quantity of ancient Chinese poetry.

Item Type: Book
Note:

The poet gave the editors first use of his archive for this important long poem, which enabled them to produce the first fully annotated edition, revealing for the first time the varied sources of the quoted material that makes up the greater part of this work. A new essay by each of the editors accompanies the annotated text. Kerridge's essay, approximately 10,500 words in length, makes use of the newly available archive to present a new interpretation of the poem, a new account of the methods involved in its composition, and an analysis of ways of reading it.
