I tell you what to do: autonomy, control and play in game compositions

Saunders, J (2015) I tell you what to do: autonomy, control and play in game compositions. In: Authorship in Music, 6-7 March 2015, University of Oxford.

Abstract

Game compositions prioritise rules and processes over material and content. They operate on the participants, facilitating inter-personal exchange in dynamic ways. Such pieces question the role of composers, recasting them as facilitators who open up spaces for interaction, or as referees who mediate performances. The paper examines key game pieces, including John Zorn’s Cobra (1984), Christian Wolff’s Burdocks (1971), alongside my current composition project things to do (2012).
