Abstract: As 'Touretteshero', Jessica Thom uses her Tourette's a source of inspiration, both for her own art and in collaboration with others. For her talk 'Tourette's syndrome -- why it doesn’t define me', presented at the TEDx event Albertopolis at the Albert Hall, she commissioned sound composition/sonification 'Alchemy of Chaos' as an example of how her condition can be used as artistic material, and how in turn this can offer insight into the condition itself. Jessica has an advancing form of the condition which produces full-body fits. In trying to understand how and why these occur she has kept a year long diary of these. 'Alchemy of Chaos' uses data from this diary to condense the year into a 5-minute composition (presented in full in the talk) which helps patterns in the data to be perceived through our sense of musical time.
