Note: | This chapter is on ethnographic and Linguistic mapping in the long nineteenth century. Two main trends are explored: first, the emergence of ethnographic maps and atlases produced in Europe but representing all parts of the globe; and second, the production of linguistic maps in relation to border disputes and national identity in Europe and Russia. In both domains, cartography served as a powerful tool for reinforcing ideas about ethnic difference and for justifying political actions. János Jeney contributed the section on the Habsburg Empire / Austro-Hungary. |
