This chapter hovers in the tense moment before departure — the gathering of momentum, the breath held before the leap. Taking inspiration from the patients’ exodus and Guattari’s lines of flight, the exhibition explores escape as both liberation and collapse. Flight here is not heroic, but precarious — channeling Icarus, Sisyphus, Montaigne’s fall, and other airborne allegories. At Foreign & Domestic’s half-underground space, viewers encounter works that trace states of lift-off and loss of footing, a choreography of altitude and descent. Mike Kelley’s definition of art as the “phantom step” — that disorienting lurch when one steps into nothingness — guides this moment. …Aeronauts Aimed for Altitude, Even… reveals that vertiginous instant when the ground disappears, and all that’s left is the possibility of elsewhere.
