| Abstract: | In 2021, the Serralves Foundation received works on deposit from the Leal Rios Collection, bringing together more than 70 Portuguese and international artists. Due to its size, coherence, and prestige, this collection constitutes one of the most significant collections of contemporary art in Portugal, recognized for its curatorial rigor and the consistency of its defining choices. Although the Leal Rios Foundation has its own space in Lisbon, many of the works now presented at Serralves, due to their demanding installation conditions, had never been publicly exhibited. The exhibition in the Álvaro Siza Wing specifically highlights these previously unseen pieces, revealing a highly relevant artistic heritage. The exhibition also includes works by artists considered "anchors" of the collection, promoting dialogues between different generations, geographies, and artistic languages. This highlights one of the unique aspects of the Leal Rios Collection: its commitment to following the trajectory of various artists through the acquisition of multiple works, allowing for an understanding of the evolution and depth of their practices. This exhibition reinforces Serralves' role as a space for disseminating and promoting major collections of contemporary art in Portugal. |
