Abstract
This chapter examines the concept of digital resilience in the context of technology use among children and young people (CYP), particularly university students. Drawing on interdisciplinary research, it critiques simplistic metrics such as screen time and explores how design features, cognitive development, and user engagement contribute to understanding technology-related harms. The chapter highlights the need for a nuanced understanding of digital behaviours, to better understand harms and how they present across platforms, as well as the need to support the user, particularly CYP. Emphasising the role of self-regulation, reflection, and mindfulness, the chapter conceptualises digital resilience as a user-centred, flexible approach that empowers individuals to manage technology in a balanced and beneficial way. It advocates for age-appropriate design, enhanced safeguards, and supportive interventions across education and healthcare, offering a framework for supporting CYP in navigating digital environments safely and effectively.
