Abstract
It is a great pleasure and privilege to bring together and share the collective expertise of the authors in this handbook. It signals a key moment in the history of physical literacy, as the body of work has now grown to a point where a handbook is not only possible but much awaited. The concept of physical literacy has evolved significantly over the past few decades. Initially emerging as a framework to rethink the way we approach lifelong engagement in movement and physical activity, it has since expanded into a rich interdisciplinary field that bridges education, health, sport, and public policy. The concept has grown from theoretical, conceptual, and philosophical discussions to now include lifeworld applications and considerations for implementation across a range of sectors the world over. As such, for many countries around the world, physical literacy has become a foundational concept in promoting lifelong participation in physical activity.
