Abstract

This chapter explores the profound connection between physical literacy and human flourishing, arguing that developing physical literacy is essential for leading a fulfilling life. Physical literacy is presented as a multidimensional concept encompassing the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding necessary for lifelong engagement in physical activity. Human flourishing is understood as a holistic construct emphasising physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. The chapter delves into the shared philosophical foundations of both concepts, including monism, existentialism, and phenomenology, highlighting their common emphasis on the individual as an indivisible whole interacting with their environment. It examines various frameworks of human flourishing, demonstrating how physical literacy aligns with and contributes to key constituents such as happiness, health, purpose, self-acceptance, and positive relationships. Furthermore, the discussion emphasises the critical role of human embodiment in both physical literacy and flourishing, asserting that our innate capacity for movement is fundamental to self-discovery and optimal development. The chapter concludes by advocating for the prioritisation of physical literacy development across the lifespan, recognising its potential to promote holistic well-being, and nurture thriving individuals and communities.
