Abstract

Physical literacy (PL), defined as the holistic integration of motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to foster lifelong engagement in physical activity, is increasingly recognised as a crucial construct for public health, education, and community development. This chapter delves into the transformative potential of PL as a guiding framework to enhance health and health care systems. We present two compelling Scottish case studies: National Health Service Lanarkshire and Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership. These organisations have uniquely yet complementarily leveraged PL, demonstrating its capacity as a system-level catalyst for addressing inactivity, inequality, and population health at a local level through innovative health care provision.
