Abstract
This chapter delves into the concept of ‘physical literacy’, exploring its nuanced meaning and addressing common misinterpretations. It examines the initial intentions behind using the terms ‘physical’ and ‘literacy’ and the challenges encountered in their interpretation. The discussion highlights how ‘physical’, despite dualistic associations, was chosen for its accessibility in conveying the embodied human dimension, and how ‘literacy’ was selected to underscore the concept's dynamic, holistic, and lifelong development aspects. The chapter also clarifies that physical literacy is a process of ongoing development, encompassing physical, cognitive, affective, and social domains, rather than a static state or mere physical competence. Ultimately, it promotes physical literacy as an inclusive, human-centred concept that fosters well-being and agency through a positive relationship with movement and physical activity.
