Abstract

This chapter explores the philosophical underpinnings and practical implications of physical literacy, drawing primarily from monism (holism), existentialism, and phenomenology. It outlines seven key instructional principles: focusing on the individual, promoting motivation, enhancing confidence, developing physical competence, fostering knowledge and understanding, devolving responsibility, and using feedback as a motivational tool. Furthermore, the chapter details how these principles, along with identified attributes and symptomatic behaviours, combine to form a comprehensive framework for nurturing physical literacy. This updated framework emphasises physical literacy as a lifelong, lifewide, holistic, inclusive, adaptable journey that fosters agency, responsibility, and empowerment, while also being culturally and personally relevant. By embracing these evolving principles, attributes, and behaviours, the chapter aims to provide guidance on operationalising physical literacy in practice, empowering individuals to develop a deep, enduring connection with movement and physical activity for a healthy and fulfilling life.
