Abstract

Transition Templates brings ecological economists’ proposals for a good life for all within planetary boundaries into design with a transition-oriented futuring tool to envision pathways towards “Design Within Planetary Boundaries” (DWPB). The method investigates gaps between the imperatives described by the planetary science, the systemic transformations proposed by ecological economics, and the current design industry provision. Since ecological knowledge has historically been undervalued across design landscapes, new methods are needed to support ecological forms of design thinking and practice. Transition Templates Four Futures Framework (TT-FFF) offers a structure to imagine and explore diverse ecological design futures. This ecological design futuring exercise prompts participants to map pathways beyond current extractive and defuturing design trajectories to sustainable, restorative, and regenerative alternatives (i.e., pathways to DWPB). The TT-FFF encourages emergent ecological imaginaries at the intersection of political, economic, social, and technological change.
