Abstract

This chapter explores the possibilities of “dances yet to come” and articulates a creative response to the challenge of preparing Higher Education Masters-level dance students for the development, presentation, and assessment of choreographic work that may never be performed. This work explores themes of imagining and being “otherwise” (Grosz, E., 'Becoming undone: Darwinian reflections on life, politics and art'. Duke University Press, 2011, p. 87), speculative fabulation (Haraway, D., 'Staying with the trouble: Making kin in the Chthulucene'. Duke University Press, 2016), and corporeal projection in relation to pedagogical challenges presented during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns posed by the cessation of live performance and assessment work. The chapter draws on ideas of embodied and poetic imagining and creative dreaming (Bachelard, 1964; Hunter, Victoria, 2021, 'Site, dance and body: Movement: Materials and Corporeal Engagement', London: Palgrave, Le Guin, 1976, 'The word for world is forest'. London: Orion Publishing) to invite reflection on how we might capture nuanced engagements with arts-based Practice-as-Research whilst edging towards an outcome that might not, as yet, be realised.
