Abstract

In architectural practice, the production of drawings involves a specific set of actions that restrict bodily movements and are typically confined to sitting at a drawing board or computer screen. Drawn lines emerge through the use of a mouse click, a finger swipe on an iPad, or a hand moving a pencil or pen across a sketchbook. Similarly, architectural representation and its production processes are sedimented within binary thinking such as male/female, inside/outside, subject/object; therefore, architectural drawing practices can be said to perform through distance and separation. By considering architectural drawing through movement in this chapter, we examine the role of human actions in the creation of space. This essay reflects on the Patience in Placemaking, AHRA 2023, workshop held by dancers/choreographers Virginia Farman, Victoria Hunter, and interior architect Belinda Mitchell, which explored alternative modes of knowing the built environment through dance improvisational processes and drawing methods that cultivated ‘caring-for’ the emerging environment, moving, and making together.
