Abstract
This chapter is an experimental exercise in working with embodied accounts of spatial practices of care within urban action. It moves beyond established modes of writing about practice-based research, which often use reflection, and, instead, proposes diffraction as an alternative tool/method for working from within and reading-writing differently. Connecting theories of dance and movement with practices of architecture and urban design in novel ways, this diffractive approach makes use of advancements by new materialist thinkers such as Karen Barad. The rigour of this way of working lies in being mindful of and responsive to the relational landscape within which practice-based research is entangled. Designing a careful research apparatus which attends to and produces difference surfaces the responsibility and accountability of researchers as active bodies in these dynamics. In this chapter, this has meant choreographing exchanges, curating interactions, holding space and creating propositions and situations that are intrinsically open. This original methodology for working diffractively with others holds direct relevance for research seeking to think through practices of care across the architectural humanities and beyond.
