Distraction in action

Derby, M, Parrott, F, Dunseath, J, Squires, K and Undy, C (2025) Distraction in action. In: Have Some Imagination: Towards A Manifesto For Arts Education, 7-8 February 2025, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK.

Abstract

A conference workshop led by Derby and Parrott with contributions from Dunseath, Squires and Undy. It explored distraction as a creative pedagogical tool, using multi-sensory methods, interruption, and material engagement to promote non-linear, adaptive thinking. By reframing distraction as vital to creative learning, it challenged linear traditional attention models, encouraging associative thought through film and material interactions.
