The etching shown at the 4th Egyptian Triennale came from a group of work based on photographic images taken from nature and in which the techniques of processing photographic material into etchings produced a more symbolic statement. This linked to an idea with which I was working which derives from a number of sources including Strindberg's The Death Head Moth, An Experiment in Rational Mysticism. In this text Strindberg makes a connection between the markings and colours of creatures in nature with the kinds of qualities achieved by photographic reproduction. What I was doing with the photographic image gave way eventually to reworking the same ideas with hand drawn methods. These methods had developed from my exhibition at the Spacex Gallery in 1997, where different kinds of work were juxtaposed in order to suggest new interpretations.
