Abstract: | Inspired by the role young people played in the lead-up to 1916, 'Rising' is a wide-ranging contemporary look at what revolution means to young people in Ireland now. Using archive material as well as interviews with young people, artists, journalists, and politicians (including Una Mullally, Dylan Coburn Gray, Lian Bell, Phillip McMahon) it explores how young people today become radicalised to engage with social and political issues. It asks what role they can play in a democratic society, what motivates them to action and what they can learn from the past. Developed with a cast of 20 DYT members in collaboration with documentary playwright Helena Enright and director Tom Creed it explores art as activism, music as mobiliser and theatre as propaganda. |
