Oscar Wilde: be cool

Sammells, N (2016) Oscar Wilde: be cool. In: Professorial Lecture Series 2016-17, 14 December 2016, Bath Spa University, Bath, UK.

Abstract

What does Oscar Wilde have in common with Salvador Dali's anteater and Jack Johnson, the first black world heavyweight boxing champion? This lecture will discuss the importance of 'attitude' and 'cool' in the life and works of Oscar Wilde, starting with an examination of the ways he composed himself and was perceived during his lecture tour to the United States in 1882 in which he sought to popularise his aesthetic theories and establish himself as a transatlantic celebrity.
